Like Voodoo, the Macumba movement was developed among
Latin American slaves, with the blending of Christian elements and traditional
religious beliefs and practices. It contains the same pantheon of idolatry,
fetish, symbols of the Roman Catholic Church, ecstatic dances and sacrifices...
According to the data
published in the book Les Sectes, Enfer
ou Paradis (p. 169), the Macumba ceremony includes three parts: It begins
with the point of the cross of the animals, offered to the spirits. Then the
saints are invoked with ritual dance and songs. The ceremony is filled with
magical symbols: bottles, candles, cigars, flowers and icons showing the Jeronimo spirits, the Virgin Mary and the demon. The mother or father presides over the ceremony. With music
and continuous songs are captured by the spirits, and the initiates come into a
state of hypnosis.
From what has been said, it
turns out that these religions contain the secret of a form of freedom of
slaves in Latin America, which by their physical
freedom were forced to abandon their religion without in –house consent. The progeny
of the slaves kept the memory of their ancestors' struggle, who whipped up to
run blood and they sang, citing the spirits.
The authorities of the Roman
Catholic Church are concerned, of course, about the blending of Christian faith
with the magic elements, but they have not yet been able to help these people
in a meaningful and conscious Christian transformation.
